General Contractor License Study Guide

As the number of people out of work continues to grow, more and more folks are considering the options provided by having a commercial license. Having a CDL will allow you to consider driving a big rig, a school bus, or many forms of public transit. It opens a whole new world of job possibilities. There are several steps involved with getting a commercial license and one of the first is getting your learner’s permit. To do this you will have to pass some written exams. A CDL practice test will help you prepare for them.

Before you get to that, you will need o check with your states department of transportation. Every state has different requirements and testing parameters. Knowing exactly what is expected of you before you get started can save you a bit of time and frustration.

The is no single CDL learner’s permit exam. Instead there are several, each geared towards a specific type of vehicle. You will also have to take separate tests for hauling freight or transporting people. Be sure when you sign up for your exams that you are taking the ones that best match the occupation you are trying to pursue.

You may be wondering why there are so many tests and why you should have to spend time studying for a written exam when what you need is real life experience behind the wheel. The information that you are expected to know is important for your safety as well as that of others on the road.

If you know which area of expertise you would like to focus on then get the study guides provided by the transportation department and get to studying. If you aren’t sure yet, then pick up any that you feel may be of use to you. It is always better to be too prepared than not ready enough.

You will find that the first exam you take is very similar to the one you took to get your regular driver’s permit. It is filled with general knowledge about roads signs, signaling other drivers and how to safely negotiate on the road. The questions on the vehicle specific tests are a bit more challenging, especially if you intend to drive a vehicle that carries people.

Okay, so you have studied all the information and believe that you can successfully tackle the exam. Good for you. There is just one more thing you should do. Before you schedule your test, spend a little time looking over a CDL practice test. You may find you are not as ready as you thought. No worries. Just study some more and you’ll be good to go.
