Can someone explain what kind of dust mask/respirator I will need?

I will be in India and involved in the demolishing/rebuilding of an old house. It is already very dusty and polluted there and construction is even dustier. I want to take some dust maks/respirators but don’t know which ones to get. Any suggestions would be helpful!

You can get by with a N95 dust mask. If there is any asbestos int he building, you will want a protective suit and a respirator. N95 cartridges will suffice, but you can get P100 for not much more. The P100 will also filter out organic compounds as well. If you have any facial hair, shave it off to ensure a good seal. Be sure you have a place to rinse off any dust that may be on your suit. This will keep it from getting into your system when you tke the mask/respirator off. Hope this helps.

I need to have a flood light moved from the front of the house… do I hire a contractor or electrician?

I have a floodlight at the front of my house that I need to have removed and installed at a location in the back of my house. In order for the floodlight to be installed in the backyard, a new light switch will need to be installed along with the installation of the light itself. Obviously electrical cables will need to be run too.

An electrician can handle this for you, they will run the wire and put in new outlets. You might have to do some minor repair work where the flood light used to be, though, so you’ll have to figure out the best way to do that. I’m sure the electrician can suggest something, but I don’t know if they will fix it/finish it. Good luck!

Who is the First Birthday Party For?

One of the most important things to remember is who this birthday party is really for. At the ripe old age of one, your little one is hardly likely to remember anything about it, except for the birthday cards and pictures that will remain in the scrapbook or photo album afterwards. A one-year-old baby will also not appreciate all the pretty birthday decorations in the same way that you do. They also find loud noises overwhelming. Some babies at this age are still afraid of balloons, so you should try to save those until next year.

For all of these reasons, you should keep all birthday themes fairly low-key. Don’t be seduced by all the colourful advertisements and promises presented by the ” birthday supplies” industry. Your baby would most likely be happiest with a small party, soon after naptime, with a group of their closest friends.

Therefore, keep the birthday invitation list fairly small. If your little one already goes to playgroup, for example, or you know a group of other young mothers and their babies from your visits to the park, these would be the best people to invite, along with your close nieces and nephews, Grandma and Grandpa. These are all the people that your baby is familiar with, and their presence is guaranteed to make your little one feel happy and loved.

Your baby really doesn’t want loads of loud birthday decorations and scary noises. By all means use colour-coordinated plates and serviettes if that makes you happy, but provide healthy finger foods and dips that babies and adults alike would enjoy eating rather than foods that your baby has either never eaten before or would not be any good for them. Banish anything like peanuts that could get stuck in small throats or cause allergies.

Dress the baby in something gorgeous for the photographs at the beginning, but make sure that it’s washable and don’t stress when it gets absolutely filthy!

Also remember that babies of this age tend to play next to each other, rather than together. So lay out plenty of safe toys for all the little ones to play with together on a mat. Games should be age appropriate.

Also make sure that the room is baby-proofed, with all breakables and potentially dangerous items well out of the way.

The party doesn’t need to go on longer than about an hour and a half. After that, if you want, you can put your birthday boy or girl down to rest and the adult guests can have some social time together once the focus is no longer on the birthday.

Most important of all, don’t stress. A 1st birthday is not a wedding. It doesn’t require anything elaborate. What really counts is a happy baby and some gorgeous photos in the family album!

My school club is organizing a holiday party for kids ages 3 to 10. There will be over 60 kids at this party. Only four of us are working the crafts table. For supplies, we have or plan to buy:
-Colored Construction Paper

You could always make paper chains. Cut six inch strips about inch and a half wide glue or sticky tape end. Next strip put through first one before gluing. Linking together forms the chain. You don’t have to use construction paper any colored paper will do. Use paper plates to make angels. Cut in half and join together to make cone. Ball for head, wings cut out of paper glitter on cone for dress. Have fun.

13. Check the local Business Bureau for reports from a possible disgruntled client.

14. Check with the local police department. They may have a record of drug abuse and at times split with the funds, only to show up later back in business.

15. Never give them more money than can be accounted for in material and or labor expended on the project.

16. With every check you pay them, ask for a lien release for that amount. Especially, get a final lien release upon completion of the job. If they did not pay a vendor for materials used on your home, without a lien release that vendor can attach your house until you pay it (again!).

17. You should always insist on a written contract with detailed descriptions of the work to be performed.

18. Finally, do not forget to demand a reasonable time schedule and payment plan. This procedure protects both parties against misunderstandings that can arise later.

Metal Roofing Materials

In the discussion of metal roofing (see Metal Roofing: A Buying Guide), the word “metal” covers a lot of ground. Several metals are used for roofing materials: steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper and zinc alloys. Each has different properties that affect durability, price, and appearance.

Steel, used for most metal roofing, is heavier and sturdier than aluminum. Manufacturers have settled on a number of durable coatings and finishes that protect steel from rust and corrosion. It’s usually zinc-coated for corrosion protection, then sealed. A coating of epoxy primer offers adhesion and a baked-on acrylic top coating adds color and protection. Because sheet systems are designed for commercial applications, they generally are given highly durable paint finishes. One popular flurocarbon coating used on many products is called Kynar(r). Stainless steel–a very expensive roofing material–won’t rust or corrode. Terne coating (see below) can give it a natural, matt-gray finish.

Aluminum, extremely lightweight, is the material used in much residential metal roofing. It won’t rust, but must be painted or coated for appearance. Coatings are similar to those used on steel. Environmentalists express concerns about using this precious resource for purposes such as roofing. Copper metal shingles make a visually striking roof that may last as long as the house.

Copper, rooted in centuries of use, will not rust, has no “finish” to scratch or peel, is soft enough to easily tool, and weathers naturally to a beautiful verdigris patina. Unfortunately, it’s very expensive. Alloys are formulated for strength, graceful weathering and durability. Cost depends on the specific material but, as a group, they are pricey.

The Benefits of Metal Roofing

Metal beats out conventional roofing materials on a number of counts:

Expected life. Properly installed, a metal roof should last as long as the house, completely sealing out water, surviving high winds and easily shedding snow. Metal is resistant to fire, mildew, insects and rot. Warranties vary widely but most companies strongly back their products for from 20 to 50 years.

Weight. Compared to tile at 750 pounds per square (an area equal to 100 square feet) or concrete tile at 900 pounds per square, metal roofing is lightweight. Most are from 50 to 150 pounds per square. Some types of metal shingle systems may be applied over one or two existing roofs without the need for tear-off or adding structural support. In fact, if you’re building a house or an addition, you can often downsize or reduce the number of roof support members.

Speed and ease of metal roofing installation. Most metal roofing materials come in multi-shingle sections or in sheets. An accomplished contractor can install these quickly. If your roof is stripped off and a storm is on the way, shortening the process by a day or two may prove to be a critical advantage. Note: You can also buy single metal shingles that are relatively easy–but time intensive–to install. (Unlike three-tab asphalt shingles, each piece must be individually placed and nailed.)

Fire resistance. Because metal roofs are noncombustible, they’re given a Class A fire rating (the most resistant). Part of a roof’s classification depends on materials beneath the surface that could ignite in intense heat, so some metal roofs applied over an old combustible roof–such as wood shingles– may be rated lower.

Heat conduction. Metal reflects radiant heat from the sun, minimizing midday heat gain. Though the material itself is low in insulation R-value, many systems utilize a dead-air space between the metal and roof deck to increase energy efficiency.

Minimal roof pitch. Most metal roofing materials can be installed on gently pitched roofs without danger of leaking. Typical minimum roof pitch is 3-in-12 (the roof rises 3 inches for each horizontal foot).

Metal Roofing Drawbacks

Though metal roofing offers many pluses, there are a few drawbacks or concerns worthy of consideration. For the most part, roofing manufacturers have faced these concerns and improved their products to address or solve many of them.

Cost. The biggest drawback is initial cost. Metal roofing is equivalent to other premium materials: from about $150 to $600 per square (100 square feet). The secret is that you get it back if you stay in the house for a long time. Of course, if you plan to move in a couple of years, you probably won’t get the cost returned in value. Figure you can also save on engineering the supporting structure and maintenance.

Noise. For some, the sound of rain tapping on the roof is romantic and homey; for others, it’s like living inside a drum. In a rainstorm or hailstorm, living beneath thin sheets of metal is bound to be noisier than beneath thick slate or tile. Noise can be controlled, however, both by using materials that have structural barriers to minimize the drum effect and by applying them over sound-deadening insulation and solid plywood sheathing.

Denting. Just as your car will dent if a golf ball hits it, a metal roof may dent if large hailstones fall on it. Aluminum and copper, much softer than steel, are more prone to denting. Some are guaranteed not to.

Though you shouldn’t have to walk on a roof that doesn’t leak, there may be occasions when a plumber needs to snake out a vent pipe or a chimney sweep will need access to the chimney flue. You can walk on some metal roofs, but not all–depending on how the particular product is made and the type of construction supporting it. Also, metal is slippery when wet.

Marring. Some painted finishes can peel, chip, fade, scratch or chalk, although nearly all are guaranteed for many years. Walking on some types–particularly those with a granulated-stone surface–may show wear. Installers must be careful not to scratch or dent roofing during installation–panels must be treated with care. Unlike conventional roofing, some metal shingle systems are installed from the top down, eliminating the need to walk on them. Once installed, it may be necessary to hose-off roofing now and then to keep it looking good.

Expansion and contraction. Because metal expands and contracts as it warms and cools, most new products have fastening systems that account for movement; otherwise, fasteners that secure roofing tend to work loose.

Modification. Roofing materials installed in large panels are more difficult to replace if damaged than individual shingles. Also, if you remodel or add-on to your home 10 or 20 years from now, it may be difficult to match the material.

You’re a Great Catch Father’s Day Card
Give each child a 9-inch paper plate. Cut out two small triangles from one side of paper plate to make the tail section of the fish. Glue on a seashell for the eye. In the middle of the paper plate write, “To Dad (or Grandpa, etc.), You’re a great catch!” Apply glue a thin layer all around edges of the fish and onto the tail. Sprinkle some sand on the glue while still it is still wet. Shake off excess sand. Have each child tie a piece of yarn about 14-inches long (fishing line) to a 1-foot long stick (fishing pole) and attach a paper clip to the other end of the yarn. Punch a hole where the fish’s mouth would be and hook the paper clip through it.

Anyone Can Be a Special Father Framed Art
On a piece of colored construction paper, write this saying at the bottom: “Anyone can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a daddy.” Have child press paint-covered hands to the upper corners of the paper. Add a picture of child in between the handprints. To make a frame, mount the construction paper on a larger sheet of colored tagboard and decorate with stickers, glitter, dry pasta, etc.

Father’s Shirt
Take a piece of construction paper and hold it like a hot dog bun. Fold the top down to the bottom. Next, take the paper and turn it so that the fold is on the right side. Then, going down about an inch from the top, on both sides of the paper cut about 2 inches in but not all the way in to the middle. These two cuts will make the collar if you fold the two pieces down to the middle. Add a wallpaper tie. Optional: Cut the folded side so that it opens up and write a poem inside or add a pocket and fill it with “coupons” for Dad.

I’ll Save Your Place, Dad Bookmark
Heavy paper, child’s photo, markers and crayons, and contact paper. Cut a small strip of construction paper or tagboard (about 2 inches wide by 3 inches long). Glue child’s photo to one end of the strip. Write the words “I’ll save your place, Dad.” Have child decorate it. Laminate or cover with clear contact paper.

Father’s Day Gift Idea: Snack Can
Cut a piece of construction paper to fit around a coffee can. Let children decorate the construction paper with stickers, paint, markers, crayons, glitter, etc. Glue decorated paper to the coffee can and then cover the paper with clear contact paper. Next, make a Father’s Day snack to put into the cans. Mix fish crackers, pretzels, raisins, cheerios, and popcorn together. Fill the can with the snack.

Coupon Booklet
Here’s a great and simple gift that you can make for dad that he’ll really love–a coupon booklet filled with special favors you promise to do for him. Dad can cash in a coupon any time he’s ready for a little break or a helping hand. To make the booklet, fold the sheets of 8 ½ inch by 11 inch paper in light colors into 3 equal parts. Cut along the folds, creating the coupons. Draw a line the length of a coupon on each coupon and write the favors on the lines (for example: one big hug, one whatever Dad wants, one take out the trash, etc.). Use your creativity to decorate each coupon, adding stickers, glitter, etc. Staple the coupons together to make a little booklet.

My Dad Rocks! Paperweight
Mix some glue with some water and brush mixture on a small, smooth rock. Tear some tissue paper into small pieces and place them on the rock until the top and sides are covered. On a piece of paper write “My Dad Rocks! and glue it to the top of the rock. Let dry. To finish the paperweight, use a brush to paint and cover the rock with a generous amount of the glue/water mixture. 

Things to Do with Dad – Father’s Day Activities
With children, make a list of things that they can do with their dads or other special men in their lives (fly a kite, plant a vegetable garden, lie underneath the stars, build a birdhouse, play catch, make popcorn and watch a favorite video, pack a picnic, go for a bike ride, read a book or spend time on the computer together, take a walk and pick up as many treasures as you can find while you are walking (like bottle caps and bits of wire) and make a sculpture with your findings and some glue, etc.).

Christmas should be a wonderful time for your family. But with the fast pace of modern life, it sometimes seems like you just run back and forth between working and Christmas shopping with little opportunity to spend any special time with your family. Often life is so busy you might feel lucky even to get Christmas day off from work!

Making time for family Christmas crafts projects is a great way to make the holidays magical. Making your own Christmas cards can be particularly fun, and it’s really quite simple.

There are basically two ways to make your own Christmas cards: the old-fashioned way and the modern way.

In the old fashioned way, you can use construction paper, crayons, paints, and glue to create hand-made Christmas cards. In the modern way, you can create the card on a computer and print it out. You can even buy paper specially designed for printing greeting cards at most office supply stores or online.

Surprisingly, both ways share a great deal in common. After all, a Christmas card is fairly simple. You just need a nice picture for the front and some short, nice text for the inside and perhaps for the cover.

I recommend picking the picture first. The colors in the picture will give you a better idea of what color of paper to use if you are not using white paper. Often the picture you choose will give you the perfect idea for the text.

You can get the pictures from old Christmas cards or from magazines and paste them onto the front of the card. Or your family can draw or paint the pictures. You can even find Christmas graphics online. Whether you are pasting a picture onto construction paper, painting or drawing it, or copying and pasting on a computer screen, a great picture goes a long way to creating a beautiful card. It sets the tone of the card. Do you want a funny card? A religious card? The picture sets the stage.

For the text, you can either write your own greeting or you can borrow a couple lines from Christmas stories like, “Twas The Night Before Christmas.” If it’s a religious card, you can even borrow a line or two from scriptures. You can have text on the cover of the card with the graphic or you can just have a picture on the front and only have text inside the card. It’s totally your choice.

Fun for young and old alike, making your own Christmas cards is easy and it doesn’t take long. But the fun in making them and the smile on the face of the person who opens the card will be remembered forever. Whether making your own cards or doing other family Christmas crafts projects, the key is that these family activities create fond memories that last a lifetime.
