What would you do if the utility companies paid you for energy?

You, like me, probably didn’t even know that was possible.

What if you never had to pay energy bills ever again?

Again, something else I didn’t know was possible.

These two questions took me completely by surprise when I started doing research for this article. Especially since both questions pertain to solar power.

The Truth About Solar Efficiency

Everyone has heard about the benefits of solar power in terms of environmental conservation and lessening our dependence on imported fossil fuel. But these are both concepts that apply on a grand scale. It’s very hard to equate what this means to an individual. We have to examine the past, present, and future of solar energy, in order to see that there is huge promise for the future of solar energy.

I, for one, could not have begun to tell you what the hard facts were in relation to solar power until I started digging. It turns out that what we hear about solar energy is just the tip of the iceberg. Which are disappearing, I might add, to the tune of 20% during the summer of 2008.

A Brief History

Before we go exploring the ins and outs of solar energy, let’s take a look at how this force of nature has evolved over the centuries.

Solar technology isn’t new. It probably started some time in the 7th Century B.C., when people learned how to use glass and sunlight to light a fire. There is some evidence that ancient cultures across the globe have used glass and polished metals to concentrate the heat and light of the sun. This concept has been around so long that the Justinian Code of 6th Century A.D. decreed that every individual had “Sun Rights”.

Skip ahead several hundred years and you will find documentation detailing the construction and use of equipment that harnesses the heat and power of the sun.

Solar Power Today

Now that we know where we’ve been, let’s look at where we are.

Right now, all across our planet, governments and organizations are installing solar panels and contributing funds to further research into a renewable energy source that is hoped to rival conventional energy in the next decade.

In the future, we can look forward to more solar energy homes and cars that perform up to the standards we expect from traditional fuel sources. Right this very moment I am living in a house that has solar panels to heat my water, and it does get very hot. I do, however, worry about having hot water at 2 a.m. Not that I take showers very often at that hour, but a writer’s work isn’t always done when the sun sets.

Solar Timeline

The following timeline for solar energy from the U.S. Department of Energy, lists the milestones in the historical development of solar technology from the 7th Century B.C. to now.

* 700 B.C.
A magnifying glass is used to concentrate the sun’s rays on a fuel and light a fire for light, warmth, and cooking.

* 300 B.C.
Greeks and Romans use mirrors to light torches for religious purposes.

* 200 B.C.
As early as 212 B.C., Greek scientist Archimedes makes use of the reflective properties of bronze shields to focus sunlight and set fire to Rome’s wooden ships, which were besieging Syracuse. (Although there is no proof that this actually happened, the Greek navy recreated the experiment in 1973 and successfully set fire to a wooden boat 50 meters away.)

* 20 A.D.
The Chinese report using mirrors to light torches for religious purposes.

* 100 to 400 A.D.
In the first to the fourth centuries, Roman bath houses are built with large, south-facing windows to let in the sun’s warmth.

* 600 A.D.
Sunrooms on houses and public buildings are so common that the Justinian Code establishes “sun rights” to ensure that a building has access to the sun.

* 1300 A.D.
In North America, the ancestors of Pueblo people known as Anasazi build south-facing cliff dwellings that capture the warmth of the winter sun.

* 1700 to 1900 A.D.
Solar contraptions such as photovoltaic fiber, solar cells, and solar steam engines are invented. Eventually a water heater is power by solar electricity.

* 1900s
Solar technology improved thousands of times over, with a vast array of solar materials and solar collectors being constructed and implemented all over the world. Entire towns are powered by solar energy by the year 2000. Buildings are constructed with photovoltaic glass and green roofs, and are self-sustainable thanks to the advancements is solar power conversion.

* 2000s
Houses are powered with residential solar power systems sold in Home Depot, and NASA builds rockets and planes powered entirely by solar energy. Solar power is regarded as an inefficient possible solution to the upcoming oil issue.

* The Future
Within 10 years, continued advances in solar technology will allow us to generate all the electricity needed to power the entire US, and photovoltaic power will be competitive in price with traditional sources of electricity.

Solar electricity will be used in an electrolysis process that separates the hydrogen and oxygen in water so the hydrogen can be used in fuel cells for transportation and in buildings.

Pros and Cons of Solar Power

So this is where we must think about and examine the ups and downs of solar power.

* First, the sun is free. Once you pay for your solar panels, you are done paying to power your home. Conversely, the sun does take a hiatus. Even so, you can switch to battery power to take up the slack if you want.

* Second, if you have a system that produces more energy than you use, you can sell the excess energy to the utility company. But that usually requires you to live in a very sunny climate.

* Third, the cost of maintenance is very low. Since it is just a flat panel that doesn’t move, you don’t have to worry very much about mechanical malfunctions. Unfortunately, the initial cost of these panels can be very expensive and serves as a deterrent to buying.

I hope that these facts encourage you to look to the future of energy production. Environmental conservation is everyone’s responsibility. We all do what we can. Hopefully sometime soon it will be more cost effective. We can scarce afford to lose the only habitable planet we have and some species, like the polar bear, are already losing.

I will be in India and involved in the demolishing/rebuilding of an old house. It is already very dusty and polluted there and construction is even dustier. I want to take some dust maks/respirators but don’t know which ones to get. Any suggestions would be helpful!

You can get by with a N95 dust mask. If there is any asbestos int he building, you will want a protective suit and a respirator. N95 cartridges will suffice, but you can get P100 for not much more. The P100 will also filter out organic compounds as well. If you have any facial hair, shave it off to ensure a good seal. Be sure you have a place to rinse off any dust that may be on your suit. This will keep it from getting into your system when you tke the mask/respirator off. Hope this helps.

“Building a wooden deck” How do I attach my 2×8’s to a block wall thats poured solid?

I am getting ready to build a wooden wraparound deck onto my house. I am framing off my already existing block foundation wall and the cells on this wall have been poured solid during construction. What type of fastener do you reccommend using to attach my framing 2×8 board to this block wall ? Also I have no axcess to the backside of the block wall.

You’ll need masonry bolts that will go into the matching-sized two-step expansion anchors which will fit into the mortar gaps in the brick.

You’ll drill holes (with a masonry bit) into the mortar where the holes line up. Drill coordinating holes in (studs/2×4s) whatever you’re using to attach the two. Ratchet down as hard as you can go.

Note:Buy a few masonry bits and keep them wet with a little water during the drilling process. You’ll go through the bits pretty quickly.

Wire Harness Assembly

A Cable harness, commonly used in construction machinery and cars, is a string of cables and/or wires which are used to transmit information or energy. Also, if these wires are constricted into a non-flexible bundle, the risk of a short is reduced, as is the installation time (as the installer only has to install one harness) and if the wires are bound into a fire-resistant sleeve, the risk of fire is greatly reduced.
How are wire harnesses produced?
 Typically, Cable harnesses are designed according to geometric and electrical requirements. A diagram is then provided for the preparation and assembly. The wires are first cut to the desired length, usually using a specially designed for the purpose, then the ends of the wires are stripped to expose the core of the wires, which are then fitted with any required terminals and connector housings. Next, the cables are assembled and clamped together on a special workbench, or onto a pin board in accordance to the design specification, to form the cable harness. Then any required protective sleeves, extruded yarn or conduit, are fitted and the harness is ready to be fitted directly in the vehicle or shipped.
 Although the majority of production nowadays is automated, cable harnesses tend to be manufactured manually because of the many different and intricate processes involved, such as routing wires through sleeves, inserting one sleeve into another and fastening strands with tape, clamps or cable ties. Although such processes can be learned quickly without the need for qualifications, it is clearly difficult for these processes to become automated in the foreseeable future.

If you are someone that doesn’t believe in global warming, I think you should be the first to read this. I realize that is too much to ask for, so I will assume that you are someone who does care and is thinking about personally  doing something to help save our planet. Many of the ideas and tips set down in this article I do currently live by, however, it takes a very special individual to make this kind of a concerted effort of commitment. I can only assume that you are researching it to either improve your current green efforts, or to find out what it will take to completely go green. For those greenhouse gas skeptics, let’s just agree to cleanup the planet, for no other good reason than to restore its beauty. I have some ideas that will cost you nothing but effort to implement. I also will suggest some inexpensive and highly effective ways that will start saving you money almost immediately. We will start with the tips that will cost you nothing.

1.Keep a separate trash bag for all recyclable waste and not just the ones you can return for cash. If your municipality doesn’t offer separate recycle bins, call your representative and get a program implemented. They will make money. Also, if you have a garden, discarded fruits and vegetables as well as coffee grounds and egg shells make great mulch.

2.As we all know heating and air-conditioning takes up a great deal of energy and always cause a spike in your energy bill. A simple thing like wearing a sweater in the winter, and lowering the heater, just five degrees can make a big difference. Likewise in the summer turn the air conditioning down. Especially if there are only a couple of you in the house at a time. Fans take up no more energy than the average lamp. If you make these small sacrifices, you will see a big savings on your bill.

3.Start washing your clothes in cold water. Modern powders perform just as efficiently in cold water as hot. Most of the energy that goes into washing clothes is in heating up the water. So you will save on electricity, live green and save money too.

4. On sunny days think about hanging your clothes on an old fashion clothing line. You will not only save money, but your clothes will smell fresher.  

5.Try to consume a little less of everything, from electricity, to gas in the car, to the food you eat. Take time to write out a shopping list, and stick to it. If you feel the impulse to buy something you don’t really need, get into the habit of waiting 24 hours, then review it. The chances are you either won’t want it any more, or will have forgotten all about it.

Well aside from a little effort, I don’t see any outlay of expensive for any of those projects. So now taking the old adage it takes money to make money, let us explore these possibilities. Keep in mind that you will not only recoup  your initial investment, but in a very short time your energy bill will reflect substantial savings.

The two drawbacks that critics used to discredit the fluorescent that being the expense and the difference in lighting  that the bulbs give off,  have greatly diminished. The hue the fluorescent gives off, while still not the same has recently improved. I have seen these bulbs in the local dollar stores, so everyone can now take advantage of them.

Renewable Energy: Residential solar and wind power cannot only help save the planet, but thousands of dollars in utility company cost. Many chose to go off grid, and still other’s actually make money by selling energy back to the utilities.

Solar is a much better option for residential installation than   wind power is. If at all possible, especially in windy areas, both forms of renewable energy are preferred. Besides the obvious reason for considering solar, the fact that it is a renewable non- polluting source of energy, you should also know that it has no moving parts to break down, and requires very little maintenance. I need to have a flood light moved from the front of the house… do I hire a contractor or electrician?

I have a floodlight at the front of my house that I need to have removed and installed at a location in the back of my house. In order for the floodlight to be installed in the backyard, a new light switch will need to be installed along with the installation of the light itself. Obviously electrical cables will need to be run too.

An electrician can handle this for you, they will run the wire and put in new outlets. You might have to do some minor repair work where the flood light used to be, though, so you’ll have to figure out the best way to do that. I’m sure the electrician can suggest something, but I don’t know if they will fix it/finish it. Good luck!

Remote-Controlled Toys: Tools You Will Need

Building a radio controlled project requires a huge amount of time and detail when you are putting the pieces together, or even cutting the pieces out to be assembled. Most people who do it as a hobby will have many different tools that they use throughout the course of assembling a radio controlled project. If you want to build something for the first time, you will need some materials that will come in immensely handy throughout the process. Here I will name some of the main ones, but you will most likely need to find some more specific tools to fit your personal needs.

Of course, the first thing you need is the raw material that will be used to construct the project. Most radio controlled projects are made out of wood. If your plans don’t call for a specific type, you will have to choose it yourself, which can be tough. Balsa wood is the most popular choice, especially for toy airplanes and helicopters. It is extremely light, while maintaining a good level of solidity. You can build an entire airplane frame out of it, and it will have a minimal amount of flex. IF you are building a larger model of an airplane or other vehicle, then balsa may be too soft, in which case you will want to look for other woods.

The radio and motor equipment is the 2nd most important part. If you are a really enthusiastic radio controlled hobbyist as well as an engineer of some sort, then you may consider making it all out of the various components. It is possible to buy all of the electric components of the radio and motor systems separately. However, if you do this you will have to deal with all of the electrical concepts and parts including transistors, resistors, and all those other things that make it so daunting. There is no shame in buying transmitters or motors pre-assembled and just gluing them wherever they need to go. It will definitely save you some time.

The first tool that should never leave the arsenal of a radio control enthusiast is a good old X-Acto Knife. Depending on the material that you are using to build your project, you will need some type of tack or glue to hold it together. There are many different choices for this area. You can use superglue, wood glue, or epoxy, and each one will hold fairly sturdy. Look up the type of wood or plastic that you are using, and see what type of tack is recommended to fasten it. If you are building a remote control boat or even a submarine, you will have to consider the matter of waterproofing it to avoid ruining the electrical components when you first put it in the water. This is usually accomplished through some sealing putty for cracks and a spray-on sealant to keep the wood from soaking.

At some point you will have to cut all of the wood into the segments that you require to piece together the final product. While it is possible with a handsaw, it is definitely not the best choice. A table saw works best for larger pieces, but for finer details you would be hard pressed to find a better tool than a Dremel Tool. They look like electric toothbrushes, and have quickly rotating heads that can grind away balsa wood in a matter of seconds. They allow for maximum accuracy, whether you are shaping a piece of wood or making holes for wiring.

Looking for RC Construction Set?

A few years ago, I saw a remote control set that looked like a bunch of Construction Vehicles, but they picked up these red or blue balls. The object was to get them to the sorters that separated the colors. The controllers could work on all the vehicles. The set got Toy of the Year for whatever year it came out, but I can’t find it. Does anyone know the name of the set?

So I play Runescape, and I am currently on my way to 99 hunter hunter. I am level 95, and I am tired of hunting red chinchompas, right now I just want the skill cape… The game has become very boring for me and I am moving onto other things like construction and etc. I was wondering if anyone could tell me a better monster to hunt thats really fast xp and can get me to level 99 fast.
