Students doing a regular degree are all set to face severe competition from their contemporaries doing the same through distance learning. Univ. of Southern Miss vs. ITT Tech/Construction Management?

Currently I am a laid off draftsman from an architectural firm with 2.5 years experience and 4 years experience in the residential Construction Industry. I have an associates degree in drafting and design through ITT Tech. I am considering going back for my bachelors degree in construction management through ITT Tech or the Univeristy of Southern Mississippi for construction engineering technology. Both are taught through distance learning. Would starting from scratch at the U of Southern Miss be a better option than ITT Tech which would only be 2 additional years? What is the difference from construction engineering vs. management? What kind of fields can I enter? What salary can I expect?

I would go with the trade school. You already have a degree. What you need is hands on. Get your feet in the door with ITT, get into CM at any level and work 3+ years then move into CM doing public works. Schools, City, County, State or Federal is where the better CM money is. The easiest for you to start would be home building.

Second River Niger Bridge and a Sea Port at Onitsha: Shall We Celebrate?

The River Niger Bridge connecting Asaba and Onitsha one side and the Western Nigeria with South-Eastern Nigeria, this bridge is strategically located between Asaba and Onitsha and was constructed by the nation’s former colonial masters, Britain in December 1965 at the cost of 5 million British pounds. The Bridge has obviously become old with frequent complaints by motorists and experts who believe that regular vehicular traffics and heavy duty trucks amongst others and indeed old age now causes the Bridge to become a trap. Most of the nuts and bolts used by the British colonial government cannot be found anywhere in the world because they have become obsolesced.

Frequent complaints from experts compelled the Federal Government to carry out some rehabilitation works on the bridge in 2005, but before now opinions have called for the construction of another bridge in what has become known as the second River Niger Bridge to avoid foreseen disasters that might befall motorists on the bridge. Much as the cry for the construction of second River Niger Bridge has persisted, the government of the country has turned deaf ears, stylishly making promises on awards of contracts for the construction of the second bridge. By now, every Nigerian has become inured to these pledges and promises which never get fulfilled. Claims and counter claims for the award of the contract have only become part of the national anthem of the nation recited by the nation’s leaders either whenever an election is coming up or towards the end of their tenure.

Experts wonder why the government is finding it absolutely impossible to construct the bridge which will link Asaba with Owerri. Dredging the bridge has also become one promise we have become familiar with, anyone who turns on his radio is bound to hear of the dredging of this River but we never see it done. Observers maintain that the dredging of the river will enable easy passage of cargo ships and boats to the northern parts of the country and will indeed open up the South-Eastern region but our government never contemplates this to be so for the reason we cannot tell. We hear the government on December 1st 2008 signed a contract totaling 34.4 Billion Naira for the dredging of this river. Has work started?

Looking at this region which is strategic to the country, one would have expected that the river be dredged, another bridge be constructed in addition to the existing one and a commercial seaport set-up. No one will ask for too much if he advocates that a seaport be built around this river Niger to make the people of South-East, Niger State and the core northern part of the country less dependent on Lagos ports. It is thoroughly impossible to believe that a nation which laments of congestion of ports in the nation and imposes so much duty and demurrage on its citizens as a decongestion policy cannot think of constructing another port in this region. If a port cannot be located here will it be located on a desert? We must ask ourselves this question.

With the Delta State Government constructing an International and cargo Airport in Asaba, which if completed will serve the commercial needs of the entire Igbo; it will also be wise if our government cogitate on constructing a sea port at the Onitsha end of the River Niger. We must not bury ourselves in cheap excuses because we know that with today’s technology in place, anything is achievable, as we have seen landlocked nations artificially create rivers.

It is not strictly an affair of the Igbo but a national project that will benefit the nation as a whole. This area is a vibrant one and should not be idle for reasons not obviously established. And if the British colonial government thought it wise to construct the only existing bridge in the area, why is it difficult to construct another for the Igbo. We tend to read a different meaning to it when we recall that uncountable numbers of bridges are found on one lagoon alone in Lagos, yet we cry for just one more bridge to added where we know it should imperatively exist. We know it as our right; we may be crying to have it in place where it should truly belong today, but one day, we there shall arise a true leader who will wish that true federalism with equality without regard to ethnic-nationalities be enthroned. We just might not bother ourselves any more as our rights will be restored, until then we shall continue to make our leaders see us as part of the federation of Nigeria and do to us what they have done in other places. Let there be second River Niger Bridge between Asaba and Onisha.

Infrastructure and CM(Construction Manager) generic job descriptions?

Hi, I am looking for generic role descriptions, responsibilities, specifications, and qualification for Infrastructure engineer and Construction Manager.
I understand the both positions have some fields or sectors – such as such as roading, water supply, wastewater, storm water, power supply, flood management for Infrastructure engineer and building, Bridges, Dams, Underground constructions, etc for Construction Manager.
I did some research on this. However I cannot find the information that I would like to have. Do you know where can I get this information? Is there any organization or association that set a “standard criteria” for qualifying for these positions?
When I research this, results from internet search guides me to job search site, which I am not looking for.
If someone can help me, I really appreciate it.

I do not think there is standards for job descriptions, however for any managerial job practically 80% of skills is management and administration while the remaining 20% is the technical knowledge.

hobbo in a construction zone?

me and my friend were out “getting lost” in the cornfield (now becoming a neighborhood) and we came across a place coverd in junk!! a busted tv with beer cans! OMG SO MANY BEER CANS! we know teenagers are using it now but was it a hobbo place before? it had two little homemode sheds with a ripped off door from thoose old-day port-o-pottys. the blankets were ratty and barf color and it had car coushins. there was a busted tractor from the OLD OLD OLD days! and MORE JUNK than THAT! WAY MORE! I think the hobbos left the place on christmas cuz there were ordaments and wat i thot was a toy lil kinz WEBKINZ GOOGLES with a CHRISTMAS HAT! i know it wasnt a Ganz product cuz it said made in china and had no ganz print on it. so it wasn’t a googles but it looked like one cuz it had no arms. but anyway do u think hobbos live or lived there? im about to go check it out… plz let me know wat i should do. i dont wana tell anybody cuz its a fun hangout.

Sometimes developers clearly rest on their past successes and just cart a game out to the stores with very simple ideas and assume people will buy it. That’s what Valve, the excellent and imaginative developers behind the Half-Life series, has done with Left 4 Dead. The only interesting part of the game is that it is set up to require teammates to stick together to survive the onslaught of various infected creatures. Beyond this feature, the game presents an extremely basic shooter that fails to create anything that hasn’t been seen in countless other bland shooters.

There really isn’t much to Left 4 Dead’s gameplay. It is a game solely made for people that like to play co-op games. You are part of a team of 4 survivors trying to make it through slightly different environments against a never-ending onslaught of infected monsters. The only part of the game that distinguishes itself is the manner in which the game requires players to stay together or suffer the consequences.

It’s basically cooperate and stick together or die. Each of the basic set of weapons, including an assault rifle, sniper gun, shotgun, and semi-automatic gun, has limited ammunition that won’t last you through an entire level. You are frequently faced with large hordes of enemies that you will easily empty a clip on. Therefore, it’s imperative that you stick together to cover each other as you reload. If a member gets overcome and knocked down by the infected, his teammates need to run over and help out or they will easily die. If someone needs to heal himself, he can’t shoot so he will need some cover fire for the 3-4 seconds it takes to bandage his wounds. It’s all constructed to prevent people from straying off on their own as a one-man army, and require people to stick together and work as a cohesive unit.

So you’ve got a group of friends that are willing to work together in the game. Now what? Well, you’ll be facing an army of the same enemies over and over for as long as you can take it. The game simply sends the same enemies at you for as long as you can fight the urge to yawn, put the controller down and put a better game in your console or PC.

The vast majority of the game is spent fighting the Horde of your basic of run-of-the-mill zombies. The only nuance to them is that they happen to be on crack, or whatever they are taking to run like cheetahs even thought they are dead. The Horde of infected zombies will run at your team in large droves in an attempt to over-run you. Most of the levels are spent fighting these guys with 1-3 points in each level spent dealing with some of the more specialized infected enemies.

One of these unique infected monsters is the Boomer who will attempt to sneak up on you. If he gets close enough to you, he will vomit on a team member a secretion that attracts large droves of the horde. Smokers lash out their tongues to pull a team member from the fray and incapacitate him until someone kills the Smoker. Once killed, the Smoker leaves behind a lovely parting gift of green smoke that injures anyone that ventures into the remains.

The Hunter will lunge at team members and pounce on them to deal large chunks of damage with melee attacks. The Witch will leave you alone unless she detects you, which sends her flying at someone’s throat to inflict large chunks of melee damage. Tanks are huge infected monsters on steroids that will bound towards and punch you for large chunks of damage. They can take a lot of firepower to down them, so it’s important for the entire team to focus their fire on them.

Each of the monstrosities will try to sneak up on you, so it’s important to listen for some key sounds they make to ensure you are ready to deal with them. The Boomers will make burping sounds as they lurk in the darkness waiting to pray to the porcelain god or one of your teammates – whichever he finds first. Witches can be heard crying and can be avoided by turning off your flashlights and avoiding their areas. The thuds of huge Tanks moving around can be heard in the distance as they approach.

Besides shooting these same enemies over and over, there are a couple of contraptions that you will need to activate during each mission. Don’t worry; it doesn’t involve a puzzle or anything complicated that will add depth to the gameplay. You simply flip a switch or lever to raise a platform so you can gain access to later sections of the level. Every time you activate a machine, a large group of the infected horde will swarm your team until the next area is made available. It’s a very predictable sequence that is repeated on each level with different machines. There are also a few alarms that can be accidentally shot or activated that will send the enemies flocking your way as well.

The entire goal of the game is to reach the safehouse at the end of each level and eventually reach a story’s arc’s end where you need to hold off the infected masses until help arrives to jettison you away to safety. You can pick one high-powered secondary gun with limited ammo to wade through the never-ending infected swarm. If you run out of ammo, you have a weaker pistol with unlimited ammo. You can also carry one grenade and pipe bomb that actually attracts the infected before it blows them all up into little bit-sized chunks of zombie goodness.

To survive the swarms and swarms of never-ending repetitious enemies, you’ll need to explore side paths for additional first aid kits and ammunition. The on-screen item icons do a great job of cueing you into item locations after you’ve found the rooms they are located in. You can also click the control stick to tell your teammates that you’ve found some key items that they may need.

The game plays identically online and offline. The computer-controlled offline characters are very good at helping each other and you with first aid and reviving each other after getting knocked down. Your experience online will only be as good as your teammates are at sticking together and helping each other out if they get hurt.

In the Survivor vs. Infected mode, you can actually play as one of the specialized infected creatures. It’s actually about the only unique part of the game. When you play as the smoker, you can climb walls to find a key location to lash out your tongue at unsuspecting players that are trying to survive the onslaught. If you are a Boomer, your goal is to slowly sneak up on survivors while your burps clue them into your location. The infected creatures are actually very vulnerable to attacks, so it’s very important to find a nice dark space to hide in before springing your attack.

The game’s lackluster gameplay is matched with its poor presentation. The game runs on an engine that was patched together from Half-Life 2 with a few texture upgrades. While it runs very smoothly, all the levels are very unimaginative as you run through bland forests and airports to survive the infected horde that never ceases to chase your team. The sound is also nothing spectacular. For a game with a survival horror setting, the sound and music sure fail to capture an eerie mood or creep you out in any way.

For a game that solely focuses on its co-op experience, it’s pretty sad that there are far better choices out there to play with friends. Call of Duty: World at War and Gears of War 2 provide much better and varied gameplay to enjoy with people online or offline. Left 4 Dead simply asks you to stick together and shoot the same enemies repeatedly with the same weapons through boring settings. Simply adding more varied gameplay, enemies and abilities would have greatly enhanced the experience. If the game used abilities similar to the Diablo series and allowed player’s abilities to stack and help the team out, it could have been a much more varied and interesting game. Instead the repetitive gameplay fails to set itself apart from countless other shooters that hit the shelves every year and also aren’t worth playing.

In Command and Conquer 95, how do I deploy my MCV?

I bought this game used at half-price books, get it home, and realize it doesn’t have a manual. So I try the game out, and after finally beating the first level, I read a website that tells me the little truck you get is supposed to become your construction yard, so I can actually create units. I’ve pressed every button on the keyboard, and still can’t figure out how to make the thing deploy. Anyone know how?

When you’re building with blocks, bricks, stone, or any material, you have to use a good amount of logic when making your decisions. If not, the whole structure is probably doomed. Logic is the ability to use reason to make decisions. For example, when you decide on a route to work you are using logic to decide which one will be the best. Although you can do this quickly now, that wouldn’t be possible if you hadn’t developed logic skills at an early age.

These kids puzzles are helpful for logic building because they also give children some trial and error practice. If the building falls down after a bad decision, the child can try again and take a different approach. That’s an important part of logic.

Eye Hand Coordination

Clearly, these kids puzzles are going to have a huge impact on these basic motor skills that most of us take for granted. There are people who have a great deal of trouble making their hands and eyes work in unison to complete even simple tasks. Good eye-hand coordination is essential for many future activities, including sports, using a pen for writing, and driving.

Social Skills

FPS – Well FPS games are a lot of fun especially when playing mutliplayer online with friends or even other gamers. It gives me a strange feel of reality. My favorite FPS game would be COD4. COD Modern warfare 2 is also not a bad game. I love the story in both of these games.

RPG – These sort of games give me a lot of freedom for example most RPG games these days let you create your own character and make various decisions that effect the storyline and so forth. Favorite game – Dragon Age Origins without doubt.

Life Simulation – Again, I love playing games like these i have no real idea why but i think its because it lets me play god with who ever or whatever I’m simulating … Favorite game Sims 3.
