What would you do if the utility companies paid you for energy?

You, like me, probably didn’t even know that was possible.

What if you never had to pay energy bills ever again?

Again, something else I didn’t know was possible.

These two questions took me completely by surprise when I started doing research for this article. Especially since both questions pertain to solar power.

The Truth About Solar Efficiency

Everyone has heard about the benefits of solar power in terms of environmental conservation and lessening our dependence on imported fossil fuel. But these are both concepts that apply on a grand scale. It’s very hard to equate what this means to an individual. We have to examine the past, present, and future of solar energy, in order to see that there is huge promise for the future of solar energy.

I, for one, could not have begun to tell you what the hard facts were in relation to solar power until I started digging. It turns out that what we hear about solar energy is just the tip of the iceberg. Which are disappearing, I might add, to the tune of 20% during the summer of 2008.

A Brief History

Before we go exploring the ins and outs of solar energy, let’s take a look at how this force of nature has evolved over the centuries.

Solar technology isn’t new. It probably started some time in the 7th Century B.C., when people learned how to use glass and sunlight to light a fire. There is some evidence that ancient cultures across the globe have used glass and polished metals to concentrate the heat and light of the sun. This concept has been around so long that the Justinian Code of 6th Century A.D. decreed that every individual had “Sun Rights”.

Skip ahead several hundred years and you will find documentation detailing the construction and use of equipment that harnesses the heat and power of the sun.

Solar Power Today

Now that we know where we’ve been, let’s look at where we are.

Right now, all across our planet, governments and organizations are installing solar panels and contributing funds to further research into a renewable energy source that is hoped to rival conventional energy in the next decade.

In the future, we can look forward to more solar energy homes and cars that perform up to the standards we expect from traditional fuel sources. Right this very moment I am living in a house that has solar panels to heat my water, and it does get very hot. I do, however, worry about having hot water at 2 a.m. Not that I take showers very often at that hour, but a writer’s work isn’t always done when the sun sets.

Solar Timeline

The following timeline for solar energy from the U.S. Department of Energy, lists the milestones in the historical development of solar technology from the 7th Century B.C. to now.

* 700 B.C.
A magnifying glass is used to concentrate the sun’s rays on a fuel and light a fire for light, warmth, and cooking.

* 300 B.C.
Greeks and Romans use mirrors to light torches for religious purposes.

* 200 B.C.
As early as 212 B.C., Greek scientist Archimedes makes use of the reflective properties of bronze shields to focus sunlight and set fire to Rome’s wooden ships, which were besieging Syracuse. (Although there is no proof that this actually happened, the Greek navy recreated the experiment in 1973 and successfully set fire to a wooden boat 50 meters away.)

* 20 A.D.
The Chinese report using mirrors to light torches for religious purposes.

* 100 to 400 A.D.
In the first to the fourth centuries, Roman bath houses are built with large, south-facing windows to let in the sun’s warmth.

* 600 A.D.
Sunrooms on houses and public buildings are so common that the Justinian Code establishes “sun rights” to ensure that a building has access to the sun.

* 1300 A.D.
In North America, the ancestors of Pueblo people known as Anasazi build south-facing cliff dwellings that capture the warmth of the winter sun.

* 1700 to 1900 A.D.
Solar contraptions such as photovoltaic fiber, solar cells, and solar steam engines are invented. Eventually a water heater is power by solar electricity.

* 1900s
Solar technology improved thousands of times over, with a vast array of solar materials and solar collectors being constructed and implemented all over the world. Entire towns are powered by solar energy by the year 2000. Buildings are constructed with photovoltaic glass and green roofs, and are self-sustainable thanks to the advancements is solar power conversion.

* 2000s
Houses are powered with residential solar power systems sold in Home Depot, and NASA builds rockets and planes powered entirely by solar energy. Solar power is regarded as an inefficient possible solution to the upcoming oil issue.

* The Future
Within 10 years, continued advances in solar technology will allow us to generate all the electricity needed to power the entire US, and photovoltaic power will be competitive in price with traditional sources of electricity.

Solar electricity will be used in an electrolysis process that separates the hydrogen and oxygen in water so the hydrogen can be used in fuel cells for transportation and in buildings.

Pros and Cons of Solar Power

So this is where we must think about and examine the ups and downs of solar power.

* First, the sun is free. Once you pay for your solar panels, you are done paying to power your home. Conversely, the sun does take a hiatus. Even so, you can switch to battery power to take up the slack if you want.

* Second, if you have a system that produces more energy than you use, you can sell the excess energy to the utility company. But that usually requires you to live in a very sunny climate.

* Third, the cost of maintenance is very low. Since it is just a flat panel that doesn’t move, you don’t have to worry very much about mechanical malfunctions. Unfortunately, the initial cost of these panels can be very expensive and serves as a deterrent to buying.

I hope that these facts encourage you to look to the future of energy production. Environmental conservation is everyone’s responsibility. We all do what we can. Hopefully sometime soon it will be more cost effective. We can scarce afford to lose the only habitable planet we have and some species, like the polar bear, are already losing.

How Green Are You? – Keys to Sustainable Construction

There are as many definitions of  “green” as there are shades of color. Wikipedia defines a green building, also known as a sustainable building as “ a structure that is designed, built, renovated, operated, or reused in an ecological and resource-efficient manner.”

Dade County Florida’s Website reads that, “Sustainable building practices go beyond energy and water conservation to incorporate environmentally sensitive site planning, resource efficient building materials and superior indoor environmental quality.” The website lists five key benefits of sustainable construction that seems to concisely capture the “spirit” of the green building concept.

- Lower electric and water utility costs
- Environmentally effective use of building materials
- Enhanced health and productivity
- Long-term economic returns
- Reduced environmental impact

The need to reduce costs associated with energy production and  importing building materials,  the importance of conserving water and natural resources and minimizing environmental impact are challenges that are even more paramount within our island communities. Green  initiatives provide excellent benefits but carry a pricetag asociated with implementation. We’ve looked at the benefits and the challenges, but what are the affordable solutions?

Lower Eletric and Water Utility costs
Thin-film solar and Atmospheric Water Generation are two affordable technolgies that fit expectioannly well in the Caribbean region. With the abundance of sunshine we receive intermingled with overcast days, it is still estimated that a solar radiation of 4-5 hours per day is typical for the region. Using lighweight thin-film solar, with a capacity of an estimated 5 watts/sq ft. a typical 1,200 sq ft home could easily support a roof laminted 3,000 Watt solar power system. A system of this size would generate an estimated 12-15kWh per day.  By reducing electiical lighintg, cooling, and appliance loads to less than 4k the solar system can also be recued in size.

How do we reduce our electrical load calculations? Design and retrofit with L.E.D. Lighting,  A typical home using high efficiency L.E.D. lighting would use just under 250 Watts for the entire lighting circuit and provide equal or higher lumen output than convenienal incandescent or CFL lighting systems. Heat pump water heating technologies provide an estimates 7,000 btu output and a max water temp of 135 while using less than 800 watts nominal. Air Conditioning units using proven ductless-split DC Inverter technologies provide remote controlled zoned cooling while using as little as 1,200 watts for a 11,000btu system. Energy efficient appliances are readily available and help to reduce overall electrical loads

A very natural solution for clean water production in the Caribbean has been around since the beginning of time. Atmospheric Water Generation (AWG) systems use the natural humidity in the air to produce up to 6gallons per day of pure filtered drinking water without the need for any plumbing or realated  infrastructure. Dispensing 99.9% pure water, the AWG system can be operated directly from solar power or plugs into a standard household outlet.  With a built in water heating element the units dispense hot or cold water on demand without the need for maintaining an inventory of bottled water. Production costs are estimated between $0.06 -0.14 per gallon of water.

Environmentally Effective use of Building Materials
What’s needed is a building system that can resist high winds, is versatile, structural, provides a high level of insulation, minimim waste and is affordable. Concrete Structural Insulated Panels (CSIP) provide an excellent alternative to conventional concrete block construction in the Caribbean. Proven and accepted throughout the United States, CSIP’s are pre-designed, pre-cut, professionally engineered, insulated, provide a strucural frame and exterior and interior concrete fire resistant surfaces for finishing. These lighweight concrete panels are produced by manufacturers that are members of the Unites States Green Building Council (USGBC) such as T.Clear Corp of Hamilton  Ohio. Their ProTec® CSIP building system  provides less skilled labor, reduces Wall Construction time to a matter days verses months and is competitively afforadble when compared to block or conventioanl construction techniques. The company literature states the panels are “framing, sheathing, insulation and interior wall surface all in one. This equates to building more homes in les time with fewer associated costs and waste.

Enhanced Health and Productivity
Clean water, fresh air, low VOC and no off-gasing products should be the benchmark for homes built under the “green” design concept. Energy conservation and eco-friendly homes do not happen by accident, it takes planning and design guidelines to ensure homes provide comfort, style and are also affordable. Choosing off the shelf products that are eco-friendly minimize costs and help descrease the time required to source specialized products that add time and expense to the construction process. Despite the misconception, “green homes” can be stylish, affordable and built on a reduced timeline.

The Protec® Building System is currently used by HDC Development Corp  within the Bahamas to build as it describes, “Net Zero Energy Homes”. Recently receing apporavel from The Bahamas Ministry of Works, the Protec Building System®  is meticuoslesy engineered to design loads of up to 150 mile per winds. According to the information from the company’s website, these “Net Zero Energy Homes” gerernate more energy than they consume, have minimal environmental impact, resist high winds and are very compatiable to developers seeking higher Construction Productivity rates.

Long-term Economic Returns
Unfortunately, when green initiatives are initially introduced into some regions for the first time, typically there exists an entense amount of resistance  as traditional stakeholders, with  entrenched concepts and methods are challenged by the new technology. However, for the greater good of the entire Caribbean  region, traditional beauracratis “red tape” needs to be pierced so that a new generation may benefit from the advances in proven  technology and ensure our regions continued success in the renewable energy amd sustainable development sectors.
Openminded acceptance of proven “green technologies” will bring investment, trainig, jobs and prosperity to the Caribbean region. The region is ideal to capture the full potential of clean solar and wind power generation. Long-term economic growth is the fruit that’s harvested when we plant the seeds of green initiavtes today.

Reduced environmental impact
Waste reduction, resource conservation and matinainting pure water inventories are important issues that face any region, but even more so here in the Caribbean islands. As our population grow so does the need to pay more strict attention to the subject of  waste management and recycling. Education and acceptance of recycling is the key. Conservation is an adopted lifestyle and the population must see it as a benefit in order to embrace it. Tangible incentives such as reductions in Waste Collection rates for househgolds that recycle, reduced utility rates for homes with  Solar  or wind Power Generation systems and reduced municipal water rates for households with Atmospheric Water Generators would go a long way to helping the large public adopt and embrace “going green”. 

Lets hope the islands of the Caribbean region can by careful and wise use of our startegic natural  resources become the worldwide leader in the adoption and implemntation of proven green technologies. It is clear we have the most to gain and success will equate to increased toursim, investment, training, jobs and prosperity for our region.

Congratulations! Your baby is almost one year old, and it’s time to have a 1st birthday party. If this is your first baby, you might like some good first birthday ideas. And even if this is not your first child, you may still appreciate some good first birthday party ideas for making it a warm and loving family occasion.

Who is the First Birthday Party For?

One of the most important things to remember is who this birthday party is really for. At the ripe old age of one, your little one is hardly likely to remember anything about it, except for the birthday cards and pictures that will remain in the scrapbook or photo album afterwards. A one-year-old baby will also not appreciate all the pretty birthday decorations in the same way that you do. When you dress your little girl in her gorgeous, pink “birthday princess” outfit, bear in mind that she will probably make it absolutely filthy in seconds with bits of chocolate, ice cream, and all the other available goodies.

Therefore, renting a hall, a live band, and an elaborate catered meal would not exactly be appropriate here. You might enjoy all the pomp and circumstance, but it is hardly worth it if the hero of the occasion can’t stand it and screams all the way through. If you invite dozens of workmates whom your baby has never seen before, your little one is likely to find the whole experience far too overwhelming and the party will end in tears.

The first rule, therefore, when making your baby’s birthday party is to think what would make the birthday girl or boy happy. At the age of one, most babies are still leery of strangers. They also find loud noises overwhelming. Some babies at this age are still afraid of balloons, so you should try to save those until next year.

For all of these reasons, you should keep all birthday themes fairly low-key. Don’t be seduced by all the colourful advertisements and promises presented by the ” birthday supplies” industry. Your baby would most likely be happiest with a small party, soon after naptime, with a group of their closest friends.

Therefore, keep the birthday invitation list fairly small. If your little one already goes to playgroup, for example, or you know a group of other young mothers and their babies from your visits to the park, these would be the best people to invite, along with your close nieces and nephews, Grandma and Grandpa. These are all the people that your baby is familiar with, and their presence is guaranteed to make your little one feel happy and loved.

Your baby really doesn’t want loads of loud birthday decorations and scary noises. By all means use colour-coordinated plates and serviettes if that makes you happy, but provide healthy finger foods and dips that babies and adults alike would enjoy eating rather than foods that your baby has either never eaten before or would not be any good for them. Banish anything like peanuts that could get stuck in small throats or cause allergies.

Dress the baby in something gorgeous for the photographs at the beginning, but make sure that it’s washable and don’t stress when it gets absolutely filthy!

Also remember that babies of this age tend to play next to each other, rather than together. So lay out plenty of safe toys for all the little ones to play with together on a mat. Games should be age appropriate.

Also make sure that the room is baby-proofed, with all breakables and potentially dangerous items well out of the way.

The party doesn’t need to go on longer than about an hour and a half. After that, if you want, you can put your birthday boy or girl down to rest and the adult guests can have some social time together once the focus is no longer on the birthday.

Most important of all, don’t stress. A 1st birthday is not a wedding. It doesn’t require anything elaborate. What really counts is a happy baby and some gorgeous photos in the family album!

Instead of designing and having your trade booth custom-made, it makes better sense to take a look at both ready-made and custom-made booths from exhibit rentals. First of all, if you do not have the eye for three-dimensional design, you may end up with a booth that looks fine from one angle of viewing only. Secondly, booths that trade show rentals offer are performance-tested and, most of the time, have been used by other traders with success. Thirdly, because companies making exhibit rentals have to have several models and several copies of each model, they are mass produced and may cost less to purchase, considering the artistry and the finish, than to have your own booth made. Unless you plan on joining a trade show every week or so, constructing your own booth will be impractical. STEP 3: Prepare a Business Plan

Once I have done all the preparations, I would start creating a detailed business plan – a document that will provide the priorities, strategies, agenda and sanity I’ll need to startup my business.

In my experience and observation of the business world, the “activity” of creating a business plan is as valuable as the end product itself. Just remember that the most important audience for a business plan is ME. I am accountable for all the statements, claims, statistics and facts. So if I try to “twist” the figure, I am actually lying to myself!

The business plan can also aid me as a tool to generate interest from financiers, venture capitalists, staffs, suppliers and strategic associates.

Regardless of the structure or format of my business plan, I will ensure that my business planning must contain answers for the following twelve questions:

1. What’s my business idea?

2. How does my idea address consumers’ needs/wants?

3. What business model suits me best?

4. What’s unique about my business idea over the rivals?

5. What is the market opportunity and potential?

6. What is my role and responsibility?

7. Who are the key staffs or workers (skip if I do not have any)?

8. What price will the customer pay and how will they buy?

9. How much money do I need to start and run the business?

10. What’s the source of my capital?

11. How will I measure the success of my business?

12. What are my key milestones?

While preparing my business plan, I would cover all the elements of a business plan shown in DAY 3. Just for your study aims, I have attached a sample business plan at the end of this section.

I must ensure that my business plan is concise and neatly formatted (i.e. Microsoft Word document for the bulk of the plan, with any financial documents as attached spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel), and need not include fancy graphics, flowery language or photos. The easier I make it to read, the better.

Alternatively, there are occasions I work better with business plan templates and wizards. Hence, I would search online as there are many business planning software packages available that only cost in the neighborhood of $100, as well as a few free online business plan templates. I would normally spend some time searching for the right software or templates to aid me in constructing my business plan.
