Up to an additional $100,000 will be made available to the city of Indianapolis for infrastructure improvements from the state’s Industrial Development Grant Fund. The city of Indianapolis has granted Heritage Crystal-Clean a $2.3 million property tax abatement and $150,000 for additional infrastructure assistance at the request of Develop Indy.

Is this wrongful termination or pregnancy discrimination? Please help!!!?

I notified my employer that I was pregnant (about 4 months along) and three weeks later I was terminated due to “unsatisfactory job performance”. Keep in mind I live in Florida which is a right to work state, however, I was never given any warning my job was in jepordy. In fact, every reason that was given to me as a means for the employer to support the dicision to terminate me, is inaccurate if not completely false. I was employed in a male dominated industry, (Construction Equipment rentals-national company) with an outside sales rep’s responsibilities. I have had numerous complaints regarding this employer and after several instances finally called HR to file a complaint. The HR manager I spoke with was one of the names given as a source of support for my termination. There is so much more but this is the jist of my situation. Your help would be appreciated. Two Key Words When Providing Ongoing Software Support: Be Specific

Once you’ve developed and installed software for a client, your work may not be done. In many cases, software developers provide ongoing software maintenance and support for their clients. Offering this service is an excellent way to build a longstanding relationship with your client while potentially gaining a long-term source of income.

But what happens if your client thinks that upgrades should be included for free, when you expect to be compensated for them? What should you charge for, and what should you do for free?

To be sure that both you and your client are clear on what your ongoing services will include, it helps to have a custom software maintenance and support agreement, signed by both parties. This type of software service contract will:

- Protect your rights over the term of the engagement

- Establish the terms for your maintenance and support services

- Specify any enhancements or updates you agree to provide

- Identify which maintenance, support and installation services will require additional compensation

- Limit your company’s liabilities

- Prevent your clients from hiring away your support and maintenance employees

What’s In a Custom Software Support Agreement?

A typical software maintenance contract begins with a detailed statement of work that clearly defines the project’s background, as well as the scope of technical support services you will perform for your client over time. Your statement of work can also set your pricing, as well as the terms under which you expect to be paid. Putting all of this in writing establishes each party’s rights and responsibilities over the term of the agreement.

This type of agreement generally sets a defined length of time that you will provide ongoing service for your client, as well as the level and hours of support and maintenance that you’ll be responsible for providing. It may also be wise to spell out exactly which updates and enhancements you agree to provide, and if you’re charging for those services, how much they will cost.

Perhaps even more important, your agreement can identify specific maintenance, support and installation services that are outside the scope of your basic engagement, and for which your client would need to provide additional compensation.

At the same time, a software service agreement can protect you from liability by specifically stating that you’re not responsible for any errors caused by client misuse, alteration or damage. And, a separate clause in the contract can prohibit your client company from attempting to hire your own maintenance and support employees onto its staff.

Additional considerations you may wish to include in your contract are:

- Who can terminate the agreement, and how

- Who owns intellectual property

- What information is considered “confidential”

- Warranties and disclaimers

- How disagreements will be arbitrated

- How your expenses will be reimbursed

How To Create Your Contract

While the prospect of writing a contract may be intimidating, you don’t need to rely on guesswork, and you don’t always need to spend thousands of dollars to have an attorney create an agreement from scratch. To be sure your software maintenance agreement covers all the bases, you may wish to purchase a contract template, customized for the IT industry, that allows you to simply adapt the content to suit the needs of each engagement.

To remain competitive in today’s marketplace managers and marketing professionals need to be familiar with E-business and EC electronic commerce strategies.    Peter Drucker understood the significance of EC “The truly revolutionary impact of the Internet Revolution is just beginning to be felt. But it is not “information” that fuels this impact. It is not “artificial intelligence.” It is not the effect of computers and data processing on decision making, policymaking, or strategy. It is something that practically no one foresaw or, indeed even talked about 10 or 15 years ago; e-commerce that is, the explosive emergence of the Internet as a major, perhaps eventually the major, worldwide distribution channel for goods, for services, and, surprisingly, for managerial and professional jobs. This is profoundly changing economics, markets and industry structure, products and services and their flow; consumer segmentation, consumer values and consumer behavior; jobs and labor markets. But the impact may be even greater on societies and politics, and above all, on the way we see the world and ourselves in it.” (Drucker 2002, pp. 3-4)  Business has quickly adopted EC technology because it improves communication, supply chains, customer service, customer acquisition, and profit margins.  Pervasive computing and behavioral computing programs help business identify customer’s needs and wants faster than ever before.  Users of the internet provide click stream data that help predict future purchases, trends, and other patterns.  This article examines how E-business and web marketing increase brand awareness, industry market share, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction.

Originally businesses used the internet to display products and information about their services.  As technology advanced there was an increasing emphasis on collaboration.  The emergence of social media technologies has permanently changed the traditional autocratic decision making process to a far more democratic model.  Just as many hands make light work cloud computing makes better content, products, and applications by tapping the creative power of the billions of people using the internet.

The effects of the brave new digital world touch every industry and person.  Every action consumers make can be analyzed to create better products and more intelligent demographic advertising.  Even those who do not participate in the internet benefit from the improved technologies.  For instance, Wal-Mart uses sophisticated WMS warehouse management software to track its inventory using RFID’s radio frequency identification to track its inventory in real time.  The tracking system has vertically integrated its supply chains reducing inventory shelf time and the need for warehouse capacity.  Those savings are then passed on to all consumers regardless of whether they use the internet.

However, the global trend has been exponential growth in EC and online participation, so business leaders are continually looking to expand their online presence.  Large businesses justify significant capital in IT upgrades using business plans and cost benefit analyses.  Amazon.com improves its E-procurement conversion rates by displaying consumer comments and they increase sales by suggesting other products similar to the one on the screen.  Websites often say “People who purchased x item also bought y item and z item.”  As invasive as this may seem most users appreciate the additional suggestions.

Small businesses including lawn companies, building companies, and other service contractors use social media websites, search engine marketing, and search engine optimization to improve their sales calls from their websites.  Entrepreneurs recognize that the internet is quickly replacing traditional phonebooks just as the automobile replaced the horse drawn carriage.  This underlines the importance of hiring an affordable website designer that will create search engine friendly content.  The prolific growth of personal and business websites make appearing on the first page results of Google and other search engines increasingly difficult.  This problem gave rise to the search engine optimization industry.  As defined byWikipedia .com, “Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines.”  Marketing executives and SEO professionals use keywords and strategically placed links to improve traffic from search engines.  For example Snowbirdseeker.com a vacation rental by owner website helps its clients advertise rentals by ranking well for the keyword seasonal rentals.  Search engines enable website owners to target customers that are already hunting for their services.

As more users become involved in the social space, more people are available to connect with each other.”  (Turban, 2010)

Businesses amass hundreds and thousands of friends by placing a link to their facebook page on their website’s pages.  Since Facebook already has healthy market penetration in The U.S. and abroad it is a great channel to maintain communications with current and prospective customers.

Human resource managers use the internet for nearly all of their activities.  The open structure makes head hunting faster than any other traditional method.  Popular websites like Monster.com and Careerbuilder.com help to quickly match employers with prospective applicants and vice versa.  Using my sql database and keyword filtration software employers are quickly able to scan applicants for the right qualifications.  The interview process remains in person, but finding qualified interviews early saves time and money.

Similarly, E-learning has transformed the way students attend class and employees receive training.  Universities offer online courses because they can reach far more students than a traditional onsite classroom.  Also, they are able to handle a larger student body without having to expand student housing or classroom capacity.  Cisco systems provides technologies that connect to the internet and other networks.  Using E-Learning and E-Training the company is able to train its employees faster and at a fraction of the previous cost.

Perhaps the most astonishing breakthroughs are coming from WIFI wireless technologies.  Developing countries with limited infrastructure have for the most part remained off the communications network.  Recently however, mobile computing has skyrocketed with nearly 600,000 cell phones and 60% market penetration in India.  Mobile computing continues to break down previous geographical barriers opening up new markets.  With each new innovation opens more possibilities.  For example, farmers use this same WIFI technology to protect the environment and improve productivity levels.  They are remotely installing intelligent nodes throughout their grounds to collect useful environmental data.  The technology is able to measure soil moisture, humidity, temperature, wind speed, rainfall, and a number of other metrics.  Each nodes data is not as significant as the picture painted by computing all of the sensors collectively.  By analyzing the data farmers or vineyard workers are able to schedule watering only in the areas that need water and conversely they can apply fungicide only in areas that are prone to the disease.  This will help to lower the fixed costs involved in vineyard management and this will have a positive effect on the environment.  Using wifi remote sensors farmers and vineyard owners are able to track and record key statistics without having to lay thousands of feet worth of wiring.  Ultimately, this new technology will mean better land use and increased food supply, which is positive for conservation efforts and the overall price of groceries.

EC strategies are essential to modern business.  E-business improves communications, supply chains, warehouse management, land use, retailing, E-tailing, logistics, customer satisfaction, and much more.  In order to create and maintain a durable competitive advantage businesses should implement EC strategies that foster customer repurchase loyalty.

Options to Find Health Insurance for Freelancers

One of the most difficult aspects of being a freelancer is finding health insurance. Those who are newly self-employed may never have purchased their own health insurance before, and some are taken by surprise by the high cost of keeping a family insured.

There are options for freelancers, but the process may take some time. It is wise to shop around thoroughly and compare the pros and cons of each plan available. Which plan to choose is reliant on a number of factors unique to the individual applying, so they should carefully weigh their options and needs so their health insurance does not become a burden on their new business.

Differences from Group Health Plans

Many individuals are surprised that a private health care plan costs so much more than the plan they had at their previous job. When a company of any size offers its employees benefits, it does it in part to supplement salaries and make their organization more desirable to quality workers. The business will organize with an insurance company to get a group discount for enrolling all of their employees in the program. This kind of group program means everyone has the same rates regardless of their age or condition, as compared to an individual insurance program where each person gets rates specific for them. Additionally, in a group plan, any rate changes or increases take affect for the group as a whole each year, and any one individual’s rates will not change by itself.

This group rate is usually significantly lower than most independent insurance rates, and as an added benefit, the employee usually only has to pay part of it. Many companies supplement the cost of an employee’s plan by paying a certain percentage of the fee themselves. The rest of the cost is deducted directly from their paycheck.

Using COBRA

The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1986 was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in order to revise and add new federal labor laws. COBRA deals with the issue of health care for those employees who have lost coverage due to a qualifying event. If the employee loses their coverage status, under the rules of the law they are allowed to continue their previous health insurance coverage for a period of time.

Not all self-employed individuals will be covered under this law, but those who have experienced divorce, separation, or death that leads to a loss in coverage can continue their plan for 36 months. Those who had their work hours drastically cut or had their job terminated can continue their insurance plan for 18 months. These are not permanent solutions and do not cover those who resigned from their previous job. Those who do qualify can use COBRA to take advantage of affordable coverage while they are developing their business.

Individual Health Care

About 10% of Americans that are insured purchase their own individual plan. The process can be daunting, because there are a wide variety of plans available and they are relatively expensive. A business owner has the option of buying a plan only for himself or herself or choosing to cover their entire family. Almost all of the major health insurance companies offer individual health care plans to the self-employed.

The easiest way to start looking for insurance is to make a budget and start looking for quotes. Many insurance company websites will offer quotes for filling out a brief questionnaire, but beware of making hasty decisions. Rates can vary greatly depending on the kind of coverage that is offered.

Association and Chamber of Commerce Plans

Sometimes, groups of associated individuals can come together to form an organization in order to secure discounted insurance rates for its members. The group can negotiate discounts and supplement the cost for everyone using group funds. Unions and associations for freelancing professionals commonly offer these services and offset costs with membership dues. The fees in these cases are very similar to those offered to employees of a business, however they may still be “individually rated,” meaning individuals may get rates based on age groups and/or the results of a doctor’s physical. Also, this kind of plan may have clauses that allow your rates to be raised depending on how you use the plan, similar to how car insurance is rated based on use Make sure to ask a lot of questions about benefits plans referred to as “group” plans, and find out whether your rates are individually set or are the same for all members of the group.

Another place to look for a group insurance plan is the local Chamber of Commerce. Community leaders often set up services like group health care to encourage citizens to start their own businesses and stimulate the local economy. Such plans are often similar to Association plans, and may be individually rated plans with a group discount.

Considerations When Shopping for Insurance

One of the many things a new business owner will have to budget for is the cost of their health insurance. It is wise to look into the cost of maintaining health insurance before rushing into starting a business.

Depending on what kind of work you do, it might be a good idea to consider working through a portable employer of record, or “Umbrella Company.” This kind of company usually offers business management services to independent consultants for a fee. Not all kinds of businesses can qualify to work through an employer of record service, so ask questions about whether this solution might be a fit for you.

Ultimately, no matter how you decide to move forward, the kind of coverage required by both you and your family should be determined. Those who have a chronic medical condition or dangerous occupation may need to pay a higher premium for better coverage. Some individual insurance plans may have exclusions for pre-existing conditions, especially if you have had any lapse in coverage, so find out how each available option may affect your eligibility.

My contract house couldn’t make payroll, they decided to make us all 1099 and Pay us within 5 days of them receiving payment from Chrysler (45 Day terms)
This started March 1st.
Chrysler sent the contract out for a rebid, and another contract house got the business. We started April 1st at our old rate and vacation time with insurance on day one.

If your 1099 income came after April 1st then pay estimated tax the second pay period, which I think is due June 15. You can go to www.irs.gov and look up estimated tax and there will be a worksheet you can fill out. You’ll also have to print a payment voucher to send in with your payment. The worksheet will walk you through how much you need to pay. You can deduct expenses for while you were an independent contractor. Your SE will be 15.3% of 92.35% of your net income. By my figures it will be closer to $1000 based on $7000. When you fill out your taxes next year you will need to file a Sch. C and a Sch. SE. You’ll be able to deduct 1/2 of your SE from your income on form 1040. I don’t know that any red flags will be raised as long as you fill out the proper forms.

Paper blankets (Craft pads) as Moving and storage blankets

Paper blanket ? For moving?   You probably never heard of this.

When considering packing furniture for a move or storage many people think about quilted moving blankets as a first choice.  That is absolutely right, but what will happen after you done with the move?

You get stuck with bunch of moving blankets that you will not need in any foreseeable future…You can try to sell it on e-bay, but online auctions for moving and storage blankets are already filled with used packing blankets for sale and you would have to sell your moving blankets cheap, which might not even be worth the trouble.

There is an alternative to cloth quilted moving blankets which is paper blankets, brown paper packing blanket or craft pads.

Many people simply do not know that this option exists. Paper packing blankets are actually better to use than quilted moving blankets, when you are placing your items into long term storage. They are clean, breathable, light and do not take too much extra space.

Paper blankets are environmentally friendly, they are made from managed resources and 100% recyclable. Wooden tables and office desks, Glass tables and coffee tables, Headboards,  Dressing tables, Chest of Drawers, Wicker furniture, Antique furniture, Wardrobes, Bedside cabinets, etc. Paper blankets can also be used as a cushioning material to fill in boxes or to nestle fragile items: just tear paper packing blanket apart and stuff moving boxes with it.

Premium quality quilted moving blankets provide better cushioning for wrapping the furniture, they are long lasting and durable of course, but you do not necessarily need that for a single move, and all these qualities come with much greater expense.

When you need covers for long term Storage or shipping, or single move, packing blankets do not need to be everlasting, be durable and heavy, They just need to get you through the move. Paper blankets ( craft pads) designed to provide cover and protect furniture from dust, light, and light scratches so the furniture does not fade and get dusty during long storage. Paper blankets are very inexpensive and light weight which will serve you well when shipping overseas container or even using locally for a move around the block.

Plus they are fully recyclable so after use you can simply place them into recycling receptacle.  That save environment and save you headaches of dealing with used moving blankets.

NOTE: Do not be discouraged from using regular blankets, but make paper blanket a money saving and environmentally friendly addition to your packing list. And if you are looking to save costs on moving it make sense to get paper blanket along with regular moving blankets. Get quilted moving blankets for heavy furniture that needs more cushioning and get paper blankets for lighter furniture or for items that will stay in storage for a long time. You can also wrap furniture in paper blankets first and then get movers to use their moving blankets which they will remove in storage and you item will remain covered inside the storage unit and well protected during moving job.

Are home builders responsible for removing debris from construction site after work is completed?

We just had a home built in Albuquerque New Mexico and have a lot of debris. We are finding electrical prongs, new and old nails, large bolts, tar paper, dry wall, plastic, cigarette butts, tile, broken glass, large chunks of cement and stucco, etc, in our back yard. This is just on the surface. We have not even tried to dig down yet. Some of it is very old and could not have been used in the construction of my home. I think my lot was used as a dump for the construction of other homes before we bought. The builder sent someone out with a leaf rake but it did no good. It is still heavy with debris. Should the home builder be responsible for removing it? I found something on the EPA website called title 40 referring to the proper storage and disposal of waste. Thanks in advance for any help in this matter.

Though they are responsible for removing their own debri and grading the land, sodding or seeding, often times they tend to back hoe everything else into the ground.

Fun Classroom Decoration for Halloween

It’s hard to believe but Halloween is already upon us again! It’s time to start thinking about bright orange and black colors, pumpkins, ghosts, skeletons, fun costumes and how you are going to decorate your classroom.

If you are just starting to think about what to do for Halloween in your classroom then you are in luck because there are some neat ideas below to help get you started. Even if you already have almost everthing all planned out you can still get some new, fresh ideas!

Huge Web and Spider On the Wall

A large, blank wall needs large decorations.  If you have a large wall in your classroom, start with a giant spider web. It is really pretty simple to make a cool looking spider web. All you need is some yarn in a color that will show up nicely against the wall you are using. Pick six points on the wall for attachment. A few good reference points are the hour hands on clock of 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, and 2. Then, simply cut 3 pieces of yarn making sure they are long enough to connect two of the points you made previously that are opposite each other. For Example, the point close to the twelve hour hand should go down to the spot at the six hour hand and so on. After the 3 pieces are attached you should have something that resembles an asterisk. Next, working in a spiral from the outside to the inside, attatch the yarn at each of the 6 points with tape or adhesive until you have at least three spirals. You may have several more spirals depending on the size of your wall. 

Once you have the web done, it’s time to create the spider. The spider should be black and can be any size and shape. You can cut the body out of black Construction Paper and then use long black pipe cleaners to make the legs. You can also make the legs out of black construction paper by cutting long rectangles and then folding them accordion-style to give the spider dimension. Once the spider is put together, attach her to the web.

If you would like to you can just create the one big spider, but it can also be a fun to let your students to make tons of small spiders out of pom-poms and pipe cleaners!

Fun Scenes of Halloween

One classroom door decoration idea is to make Halloween scenes out of colored felt or construction paper and attach them to the door. The scenes need not be scary, but warm and inviting, drawing the children inside. A kitty with a pumpkin, friendly ghosts, skeletons with top hats, or a big moon with a fence silhouette are just a few ideas to get you started. Use simple shapes and contrasting colors to make a delightful variety of mini-scenes for decorating your classroom door.  You can easily turn this into a fun project for children, whether you ask them to cut out the simple shapes or give them the ability to make the Halloween scene.

Skeletons Everywhere

A border of cut out skeletons can wrap all the way around the upper wall of your classroom. You can create the skeletons in a paper doll style, with multiple layers of White Construction Paper cut out all at once so they are attached after you unfold the paper.

One more idea is to have the children cut out the bones of small skeletons, connect the bones together with brass fasteners and then hang them around the perimeter of the classroom. Children can be creative by putting the arms and legs of their skeletons in different positions or even hanging them upside down!

Motivating classroom decorations are an important part of making a classroom where students are motivated to learn. If you would like to involve your students in classroom decoration, many lessons can be incorporated into simple classroom decorating ideas like anatomy, spelling, math and social studies.

Working In Construction Jobs Overseas

One of the best things about working in the Construction Industry is that, if you’ve got the right skills and experience, you can access a worldwide jobs market. The construction recruiters who concentrate on the most qualified candidates are often looking to fill jobs far beyond the shores of domestic industry.
Whilst it’s unlikely that semi-skilled workers or labourers will be able to compete with the local labour force for work, when it comes to engineering, quantity surveying, consultancy or site management, national borders are no limit to opportunity. Working in areas such as Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, or elsewhere in the Middle East, can be particularly rewarding; jobs in these regions tend to be for major contracts with large responsibilities – and correspondingly high benefits.
These areas offer opportunities for several reasons, though all ultimately boil down to their immense natural resource: oil. Although these nations lacked the natural resources and technological edge to keep pace at the start of the twentieth century and the industrial revolution, their importance in the modern world has fuelled an immense rate of growth. Perhaps the most common area of such work is in improving travel infrastructure – building new waterway systems for the transport of freight to the relatively few coastal facilities, improving the roads that link these nations to the wider world and expanding their existing airport facilities for their prestigious upper class. Other areas are also rapidly growing however; as the average wage has improved, these nations are seeking to build modern power generation capabilities and water treatment facilities.
Part of the reason why these areas offer such opportunities for western developers and workers though is that until recently, the Middle East and other such regions have lacked a strong economic base for modern construction. Aside from the cost and scarcity of materials, there has also been a shortage of skilled workers – of the architects, engineers and other construction expertise required to make such visions a reality. Currently, construction companies from across the world are benefiting from the massive growth of OPEC (Oil and Petroleum Exporting Countries) economies.
Of course, these jobs are not for everyone. Another reason why the prospects are so good and the rewards so attractive is because inevitably, the work involves relocating to a foreign country for an extended period of time. Some people may not like the idea of moving to such a different culture; although the weather is generally nicer, the customs are generally far different. Also, in some cases you may have to move alone – though many employers will offer free accommodation for your family members as well, not all do.
Still, the wages are generally very competitive; the work, extremely prestigious; and the benefits, very compelling. A large portion of your earnings will be untaxed depending on your employer, you’ll be provided with often luxurious accommodation for your stay and for many people, the prospect of travelling and working abroad will be compelling in itself.
Construction is a vital aspect of every economy in the modern world. If you close yourself off to the prospect of working outside of the UK, you’ll be missing out on golden opportunities.

Can somebody post here the best articles about modern construction and architecture?

I am writing an elective on the topic “What is the difference between ideas and reality, in the concept of what can be imagined and what can actually be built after that?” And honestly I am stuck right now. Look at Architects such as Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid and Coop Himmelblau. They have been described as deconstructivist architects and they create fantastic, free flowing forms that seem to defy gravity and look out of this world.

Zaha Hadid has very organic designs and has designed alot of buildings in Dubai and is designing an amazing aquatic centre for the London Olympics.

Frank Gehry built the Stata complex at MIT and they had major problems with the design, materials, weather proofing and cost. It became a big problem and MIT were suing him over it. The building is awesome though.
