Seeding Lawn in Mississippi?

My wife and I just bought a house that has huge spots in the front yard from the previous owners parking vehicles on the lawn. The ground is bare all the way down to the ‘bone’ and seems to have some sand mixed in so I think I will need to get some topsoil. This area is also partially shady because of a big tree in our yard. Is there anyway to do this without using a tiller? Will I still need straw if I put down a layer of topsoil, the seeds, and cover the seeds with another layer of soil? I thought about buying the grass squares but I found that seeding the lawn was much more economical. I saw some contractor’s seed at a home supply store marked down to $24.99 from $39.99 today and was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on seeding in September?

Sept. and Oct is “not” the right time to seed a lawn if your turf is of the “warm” season variety. And living in the south, I would venture to guess that it is a warm season turf. If it is, the best and only time it should be seeded or sodded is May to Aug. You want to seed a warm season turf just before the weather gets warm in summer (this is when warm season turf begins to grow. A “cool” season turf should be seeded or sodded in the fall, which is from today up until mid October. Because the former residents vehicles were parked in that spot, the soil in that area is for sure “compacted” and needs to be loosened up before you seed it. A quick once over with a tiller and some added compost or good topsoil should make the area plantable. Grade or level off the area and yes, it is best to cover with a thin layer of straw hay or my favorite, which is peat moss. This will prevent the seed from washing away and re-distributing in another location should you get a heavy rainfall before it germinates. The mulch will also keep the birds from stealing the seed. If you have anymore questions, feel free to add or edit with more input.. Hope this answers your question…

They would tell a friend and then that friend would tell a friend. Your phone would be ringing off the hook. I remember as an Architectural designer some days I would have up to four people wanting to schedule appointments for designs. Those days are long gone! But Fear Not! Click Here For Help
