Which trash bag would be better for to with hold a large quantity of helium?
f I am constantly putting helium inside a of trash bag and making it increase frequently, which trash bag would you thick would be the better choice for making it really big?
Option 1: 1 mill thick 55 gallon contractor bag
Option 2: 3 mill thick 42 gallon contractor bag
The difference is the bag in option 1 is capable of having more volume, but it has less thickness. But option 2 has more thickness and I THINK (NOT SURE) can hold helium for longer by stretching but it has low volume.
My other concern is since option 2 is much thicker would it not stretch and just burst quickly?
Trash bags are not suitable for helium balloons. They will not stretch without a lot of pressure, and pressure reduces or cancels out the lifting power of He.
If you don’t put the He under pressure, then either bag would be ok, but both would be much heavier than needed. The lifting capacity of 55 gallons is:
55 gal = 0.2 m³
Density of Air 1.164 kg/m³
Density of Helium gas 0.18 kg/m³
lifting capacity is the difference, or about 1 kg/m³
1 kg/m³ x 0.2 m³ = 0.2 kg or 200g or 7 US ounces.
So the lifting capacity of the bag is only 7 oz, and the bag may well weight more than that.
And if you put the He under pressure, say an increase of 1 atm, then the density doubles, and the lifting capacity drops to 0.8 kg/m³
Edit the 1 mil bag weighs about 2-3 oz, and the 3 mil bag about 6-10 oz.
