How to be safe at a construction job site?
Once upon a time, construction are regarded as one of the most dangerous occupations on earth, with zero safety regulation and no safety equipment, it is no wonder everytime the king decide to build a major monument such as the pyramid, thousands of people would die before the project is completed. Historically, most construction workers are either slaves, criminals or forced labor as most people would not want to risk their lives and endure the hardships involved.
Today, things have improved. With strict enforcement of safety rules, as well as the availability of safety equipment such as the harness, also the utilization of heavy machinery replacing human labor to carry heavy loads. The amount of accidents and fatality have reduced. This is not to say that the construction job site is the safest place in the world, construction is still the 3rd most dangerous occupation in the United States after fisherman and loggers, and it remains on the top 10 most dangerous job in most countries around the world. Accidents and injuries in the construction site occurs almost on a daily basis, this is not surprising considering the sheer amount of people working on a construction projects, there are always about 400 people working on a standard project and up to 5000 people on a mega project. And all these people work in an environment that is dark, dusty, dirty, wires and equipment lying all around, has many hidden corridors and sometimes no safety railings. It is no wonder that accidents can happen the moment you let your guard down.
The majority of accidents from construction site are minor ones, usually consisting of cut and bruises. However, major accidents often occur in forms of falling objects like bricks & glasses, electrocution from exposed wiring, falling off high places, structural collapses and motor accidents.
Hence if you are entering a construction job site, you must take care to firstly wear the appropriate safety gear, which in most cases includes the helmet, safety shoes, vest and harness. Follow the site safety regulation and do not wander around into unfamiliar territory without a guide to prevent accidents from falling from high ground or collision with forklifts/excavators. Bring along a torch light if you are working in a high rise building project as there are many dark corners in the construction job site. If in doubt, have the project personnel’s phone number handy to ask for instruction.

Why hard-hats in a Construction Zone with no overhead work going on?
Where I work I had to go try to thaw an outside pipe that had frozen. Some other workers had torn down some outbuildings and are now only moving dirt around, and moving huge boulders. The only thing that could possibly fall on me (and that’s a very unlikely thing, since we were several hundred yards away from the other action) was a huge boulder. We were required to wear orange vests and a hardhat. The orange vests, I can understand.. but what good is a hard hat against a 800 pound boulder? Not much, I suspect.
From a company standpoint: liability can be reduced by expecting the unexpected.
Blanket requirements are easier to enforce and offer some measure of protection from the occasional freak accident. Hard hats, eye protection and proper clothing are minimum standards of personal safety and in most cases required by law.

In by gone days all a contractor had to do was give the customer good quality and good service and he/she would be set. Then set back and let your customers do your selling for you. They would tell a friend and then that friend would tell a friend. Your phone would be ringing off the hook. I remember as an Architectural designer some days I would have up to four people wanting to schedule appointments for designs. Those days are long gone! But Fear Not! Click Here For Help
