Painting Coffee Tables??
Ok… so I have these two coffee tables made out of particle board with a wood-like finish that I would like to paint. What would be the best type of paint to use?
My dad is a construction painter and says that I shouldn’t bother trying to paint them because it will just bubble and not work right. Is this true??
They sound about the same as the ones I have and can be painted with the right preparation and paint. First you want to lightly sand off the shine on the surface. You can use fine sandpaper or fine steel wool. Prime the surfaces with an oil based primer. When completely dry sand as you did above. Wipe the surface to remove dust and then paint with an oil based paint in a color of your choice. For durability use 2 coats. To eliminate brush marks use a small foam roller brush. When paint is completely dry, apply 2 coats of clear oil based polyurethane. I painted mine this way 5 years ago and they are still going strong. Good Luck!
P.S. Obviously the poster didn’t read the description of the tables. You want very little sanding and why would she want to go with less durable latex and cheap spray paint. If you are going to do something that you can be proud of take the time and effort to do it right.
