Chicken Coop Construction Guidelines – 10 Tips On Constructing A Simple Backyard Coop
These chicken coop construction guidelines will provide tips on constructing a simple coop that can house a small flock of chickens and can be kept in the backyard.
1) Decide
2) Determine the location. Measure the space so that you’d know what size your coop would be. Consider the condition of the ground and the plants and other structures near and around it.
3) Have a budget plan. If you have limited funds, consider using recycled or used materials. Decide which tools and materials you’re going to purchase and which you are going to scavenge.
4) Select the designs and plans for constructing the coop. Choose the most appropriate plans for your type of location, the breed of your chickens and their number.
5) Map out a schedule. If you will build the coop yourself, make a detailed schedule plan that you will follow to the letter. This will help save time and prevent you from procrastinating.
6) Gather materials and tools. Make a list of the materials you will use for constructing the coop and the tools needed to build it. Try picking out used but serviceable materials to save money and borrow tools that you will need but don’t have the budget to purchase.
7) Start the foundation. The first part you need to build is the frame of the structure. Determine the dimensions and build the frame of your chicken house with the required measurements in mind.
Install the features that will be included in the structure. Necessary features include perching areas, nests for laying eggs, area for gathering litter, feeds and water containers, lighting, ventilation features (windows, holes, etc.) and covering or protective features.
9) Have an alternative location. If you are constructing a simple backyard coop, better have another option where you can keep your chickens when the weather is at its worst and you think your simple structure will not provide enough protection. An area where you can elevate the coop if there is threat of flooding should be one of your concerns.
10) Devise maintenance plans. You should have a regular schedule for cleaning and maintaining the coop. Have a specific time for replacing straw, cleaning the litter and putting feeds and water.
Chicken coop construction is not all about constructing and painting. Every aspect of your chickens’ needs should be addressed and specific and contingency plans should be made for each of these needs.
on the number of chickens you will have and what breed they are going to be. For a backyard poultry venture, eight to 10 chickens would be ideal. Of course, the space available will also have an impact on how many chickens you can care for.

New Home Construction: Exterior Sheathing?
Hello, our new home is being built right now and they are using Thermo Ply or some other type of styrofoam sheathing for the exterior walls.
During construction there was some tears and rips in this material. Today when I checked out the house the small holes were taped, but some of the larger ones were taped also. My question, is this the appropriate repair? Or is there a guideline that says that you can tape repairs up to X number of square inches, or X number of inches long?
Thanks,
J
Also, just an update.
I’ve decided that we will be hiring a home inspector to inspect during construction. It will be a couple hundred dollars well spent.
The plastic that they put up is a vapour barrier. You will have more insulation inside the house before your dry wall goes up. And another plastic on top of the insulation. Your interior walls are important. The outside will eventually receive it’s cover, be it brick or vinyl or wood. So, no, the taped up holes do not matter. We saw the same thing when our house was being constructed and we have no problems with air coming in. In some cases, I would say the house is too air tight. Don’t worry. Good Luck on the new home.
Go for it, if you feel it will give you piece of mind. Better to be safe than sorry. It is one of the most important investments of your life. But, knowing what we went through with our contractor, ( and he was a good one), you will have to hire this man and keep him on a retainer because you will always question a contractor’s ways. They get away with what they can because they do it without crossing the line. Unfortunately, it’s not always to our liking but it passes inspection. Don’t lose sleep, it will all work out. Just be one step ahead of them. If you see something unethical, question it. This is how we educate ourselves. Again, Good Luck.
Construction Guidelines
In by gone days all a contractor had to do was give the customer good quality and good service and he/she would be set. Then set back and let your customers do your selling for you. They would tell a friend and then that friend would tell a friend. Your phone would be ringing off the hook. I remember as an Architectural designer some days I would have up to four people wanting to schedule appointments for designs. Those days are long gone! But Fear Not! Click Here For Help
