How Is Impact Hurricane Protection Glass Made?
In this short article we are going to talk about how impact glass is constructed. Impact resistant glass is actually two pieces of glass bonded
together with an inner layerof high strength polyvinylbutyral in the center. These three pieces form a solid single piece of what we refer to as
impact glass. It’s resistance to penetration strength comes from the center section of PBV. Impact glass can be tinted, and if desired can even have
a solar coating applied to reflect the suns rays, keeping the inside of your home cooler.
It used to be you had to have tempered glass in some areas of your home like a window in your shower. Impact glass eliminates that need because
of its construction.
An impact glass window or door can also be made as an insulated glass assembly, using two panes of glass, the inside being impact, separated by
an air space. This is sometimes referred to as thermo pane. This air space acts as an insulator. This double pane assembly construction is very
popular in colder northern climates. This air space can also be filled with Argon gas, which will give the window or door even more insulating
qualities.
If you do elect to use the double pane impact glass, you need to keep in mind that in most windows and doors, only the inside piece of glass is
impact resistant. The outside pane of glass is not impact and will break. The window itself will not be penetrated, since the inside is impact, but you will need to replace the outside pane.
