V = π*r^2*h for the can.
314 = r^2*h (the pi cancels out)
There are two variables, we need to get one so we have one final variable we can find, as you do these problems, you’ll find that height is the variable you take out and isolate while you keep radius in since you can use it in an equation later on
height = 314 / Pi*r^2
A = 2*pi*r^2 + 2*pi*r*h
Sub in h from the previous equation. This causes r to be the only unknown variable on the right side of the equation:
A = 2*pi*r^2 + 2*pi*r*(314 / pi*r^2)
On the right side of the equation, the pi cancels on the second term and the r on the top and one of the r’s on the bottom cancel
A = 6.28*r^2 + 628/r
A = 6.28*r^2 + 628*r^-1
Now you have to find h. To do this, you have to take the first derivative of the equation above
Treat r as the variable (treat it as x) make sure to mention that you’re taking the derivative with respect to r.
The first derivative is:
A’ = 2*6.28*r + (-628*r^-2)
A’ = 12.56*r – 628/r^2
The minimum area occurs when the slope is 0 meaning you have to set A’ to 0 to find r:
0 = 12.56*r – 628/r^2
628/r^2 = 12.56r
50 = r^3
Take the cube root (it’s the button on you calculator with a square root sign and a little 3 to the left of it)
r = 3.68
You could’ve found r by a different way (factoring) but taking the cube root is easy here. To find h, just plug r back in the original equation:
314 = r^2*h (the pi cancels out)
314 = 3.68^2*h
h = 314/3.68^2
h = 23.19
So the dimensions would be 3.68 (radius) and 23.19 height
